Deeper, more sinister reasons than simply immaturity and stupidity explain why urban groups of radical young—and a surprising number of older—people have become emotionally unhinged: riot in city streets; disrespect the law; destroy property; threaten violence against political people they hate; send vile, disgusting messages to family members who voted for Donald Trump.
The weekend prior to the election of Mr. Trump two social psychologists wrote an article in the Wall Street Journal titled, in part, “Our Tribal Politics.” They tried to explain the “psychological causes of our national rift.” They predicted that those on the losing side would be “shocked and disgusted.” And they wrote that this would be “worrisome” because “disgust dehumanizes its targets.”
Many of us could have also predicted that the radical leftists in America would become violent and try to disturb the lives of normal people.
Although the authors didn’t distinguish right from left, they did note that more Republicans live in rural and exurb areas, and Democrats concentrate in cities and are culturally “splitting apart.”
Actually, our cultural split has been arranged by Marxists infiltrating our institutions for decades indoctrinating our young people with their destructive multicultural, politically correct and abnormal sexual ideas—the divide is now complete.
WSJ authors ended the article with another prediction. “But the true test of our democracy—and our love of country—will come on the day after the election.”
Many on the Left have failed the test: they don’t accept the democratic process; they hate America as founded and despise more than half the normal citizens—crying, rioting and carrying out other strange reactions to the election. We now know that street thugs have been hired by leftist groups to disrupt our lives, but what accounts for others acting from fear and anger?
What explains their bizarre behavior? How did so many Americans become stressed, irrational and dysfunctional?
Much of the answers to these questions can be found in recent books. Previously I have written at this site about several of them. One of the best, and most disturbing, is David Kupelian’s 2015 “The Snapping of the American Mind.” A brief summary can be read on the book cover flaps.
The Obama presidency has “turbocharged” political and cultural forces of the Left to bring about “fundamental transformation of America.” But, as Kupelian reveals, this revolution has also caused a basic negative transformation of Americans.—the nature and condition of many people has changed. The progressive domination of our news, education and government has accomplished more than expanding the state, “de-Christianizing” our culture and redistributing wealth.
With the Left’s wild celebration of sexual anarchy, its intimidating culture of political correctness, and its incomprehension of the fundamental sacredness of human life, it is also, whether intentionally or not, promoting widespread dependency, debauchery, family breakdown, crime, corruption, despair, and suicide.
Worse, the irrational hatred expressed by major press writers—at previously respected national newspapers such as the New York Times and the Washington Post—and personal vilification against decent people by leftist social media senders show their own loathsome characters.
Mr. Kupelian believes that these people revile public figures such as Ronald Reagan and Sarah Palin (and now Donald Trump) that radiate “noble character, common sense and natural grace,” because they are reminded of their own loss of these qualities. Thus, they attack people who remind them of their deprivation.
A licensed therapist in Berkeley, California agrees: “Leftists loathe Palin because she has retained something that was stripped from them years ago: a wholesomeness, a purity of heart. People on the left despise Palin because she shines a bright light on their shame and unworthiness, which they try desperately to deny.”
Commenting on Kupelian’s book the late conservative author, Phyllis Schlafly, wrote that the Obama-promoted transformation of our culture “is taking a terrible toll on the American people’s mental, emotional and spiritual well being.”
The transformers are destroying our history, our culture, our economy—and our people.
